Rad Diver

Finished in June 2018.

Rad Diver is a game I made during my first year of university. It was a short school project, we had to create a runner with Construct 2.

I also used 3DS Max to model the mountains, Blender to render them with this neon effect, Photoshop to create the sprites and the animation except for the character and the T-Rex sprites which were created using Illustrator, Audacity to edit the audio files, and FFMPEG to extract frames from the rotoscopy video I made of someone running with flippers.

The theme given was a convoluted sport so I made a mix between snorkelling and running. I chosed a retro-futuristic design, wireframe 3D, CGA-like colors, a CRT screen post-effect, a fake white border of CRT monitor on the scoreboard, synthwave music… 80’s cliché! I felt like it would match with the absurdity of my running diver. I was inspired by the look and/or the feel of stuff like Kung Fury, bad SF movies, the Scanimate, retro games commercials, Tron, etc. The T-Rex roar is in fact a modified elephant trumpet, I did this having in mind how Jurassic Park SFX were made.

I chosed to complicate the given instructions by adding the ability (and the need) to slide in addition to the jump asked. Every 15sec the game speeds up 3%. When you reach a certain score a typical 80’s word (more or less meaning “cool”) is displayed as a reward.

I implented support for gamepad by binding the major opposed buttons to be as ergonomic as possible.
Touchscreen controls are pretty bad in Construct 2 so I explored several ergonomy options but none was perfect, it’s still available though, just try it in your phone’s web browser.

Play it now in your browser! https://augustin-liglet.itch.io/rad-diver
(The highest score i’m aware of is above 70,000, if you beat it let me know in the comments)
